Canyonlands National Park is also popular for its incredible hiking and biking trails. Various routes pass by some of the park’s most notable attractions. These include the Maze with its secluded canyons, Horseshoe Canyon and its centuries-old rock paintings, and the Needles. There is plenty of fun to be had on the Colorado River, too. 

So whether you’re an adventure-seeker or history buff, Canyonlands is the ideal park for you.

In Canyonlands National Park, you’ll find several campgrounds. And for those who aren’t keen on spending the night in the wilderness, you’ll find a good selection of hotels nearby. 

River Canyon Lodge 

The River Canyon Lodge offers cozy accommodation to those visiting Moab. Here you’ll have direct access to Canyonlands National Park. When you’re not relaxing and unwinding at the hotel, you’ll likely be exploring the outdoors. 

The hotel features neat and spacious rooms equipped with homely amenities. And while there isn’t a restaurant on-site, you’ll find some incredible eateries and shops nearby. 

Camping in Canyonlands 

There are two main campsites in Canyonlands National Park. The first is Island in the Sky Campground. This features 12 sites and is open year-round on a first-come-first-serve basis. 

The second is the Needles Campground. This is ideal for groups and families as there are three group sites here. Both campgrounds have toilets, picnic tables, and fire pits.

See the Island in the Sky

The Island in the Sky is the most visited part of Canyonlands National Park. The mesa gets its name because it sits atop large sandstone cliffs 1,000 feet above the canyon floor. It is renowned for providing some of the most breathtaking viewpoints. 

There are several ways to see the Island in the Sky, including hiking and driving. But for an unforgettable experience, opt for a helicopter tour. This will allow you to see area’s terrain from a totally unique perspective. 

Go Hiking in Canyonlands 

Like many Utah national parks, Canyonlands is home to a plethora of hiking trails. Some of these traverse through the Island in the Sky district and others can be found in the Needles district. 

For beginner hikers, the Mesa Arch Trail is a must. It is an easy loop trail that takes you to Mesa Arch—one of the most photographed attractions in Utah. For something more challenging, tackle the Gooseberry hike. The first half of this hike involves a steep downhill descent and is followed by a rather difficult trek back up.

Best Time to Visit Canyonlands

The best time to visit Canyonlands, particularly for hiking or backpacking, is during spring or fall, as temperatures range between 60ºF and 80ºF during the day and 30ºF and 50ºF at night. Summers here are incredibly hot, and you may see some thunderstorms.

Capitol Reef

• Pros: Paved roads perfect for scenic drives
• Cons: Snowy winters

Located in the heart of the red rock country just off Highway 24 is the amazing Capitol Reef National Park. Here you’ll find picturesque canyons with dramatic cliffs and rock formations, as well as a geologic monocline that stretches for 100 miles. 

The park is also home to an 8-mile long road that’s perfect for scenic drives. Even if you’re not visiting for a camping trip, taking time to travel this road is a must.

Where to Stay in Capital Reef 

To see you through your Capital Reef National Park, here are the best places to stay. 

The Noor Hotel

Ideally located on the edge of Capitol Reef National Park and near the town of Torrey is the 3-star Noor Hotel. The hotel offers a quiet reprieve away from the busy town and a comfortable base from which to explore. 

There are three room types on offer, namely the traditional queen room with two queen beds, the king room, and the suite. These are well-furnished and provide fantastic views of the red-rock mountains in the distance. 

Camping in Capitol Reef 

There are three camping sites in Capitol Reef National Park. The Fruita Campground is the larger of the two, featuring 71 campsites. These are suitable for groups and individuals with RVs or tents. 

For a more secluded experience, visit the Primitive Campgrounds. There are two of these available—the Cedar Mesa Campground and Cathedral Valley Campground. These feature fewer sites and are not as easily accessible. Free backpacking is also a good option, but a permit is required.

There are plenty of things to do in Capitol Reef, from easy and challenging hikes to some incredibly scenic drives. 

Go Hiking in Capitol Reef

Capital Reef National Park features a number of hiking trails with varying degrees of difficulty. For picturesque views, the Sunset Point hike is recommended. This is a short trail that takes you to an incredible viewpoint where you’ll be able to see one of the best sunset vistas in all of Utah. 

Take the Capitol Reef Scenic Drive 

While it requires an entrance fee, this scenic drive is certainly worth including in your Capitol Reef itinerary. It features an 8-mile road that travels from Fruita Campground to Capitol Gorge Road. Travel further, and you’ll find yourself at the Capitol Gorge Trail and Pioneer Registry, where you can see the names of early pioneers carved into the canyon walls.

Best Time to Visit Capitol Reef 

The most popular time to visit Capitol Reef is during spring, as temperatures are mild and pleasant. Summers are hot, but if you wish to go fruit picking, this is a good time to visit. For fewer crowds, visit during fall or winter.

Best Time To Visit Utah National Parks

I have visited Utah National Park in the winter, spring, and fall. What I like about the winter is the low crowds and the beautiful dusting of snow on the bright red rocks. Spring and fall bring lovely weather but bigger crowds. Summer can be a dangerous time to visit as the temperatures are high and the crowds are also high. That is why I have avoided summer in Utah.
