What To Wear Snowshoeing

When you first start hiking in the summer, it can be pretty intimidating figuring out what to wear. Transitioning from summer hiking to winter hiking can be even more stressful. Being cold can be extremely uncomfortable, and there is also the risk of getting hypothermia. Now that I have been winter hiking for years, I realize that the main difference between the two seasons is learning how to layer. So I have come up with this awesome blog post on what to wear snowshoeing and how to layer for the winter. Below I have many examples of my favorite hiking clothes to keep me warm as well as my favorite snowshoes. This informative post will help you feel confident and ready to take on that POW. So be ready for an uber warm and comfortable hike in the winter.

What Is Snowshoeing

Snowshoeing is when you go hiking in the winter with a ton of snow. Since the snow is so deep, you have to strap on snowshoes to help you reach your destination. Because of the snow’s resistance, snowshoeing expends more energy than walking on dry land, so you will get a good workout out of this!

Layering

Kari Traa Sweater Is One Of My Many Layers When I Hike

So before you go and read all about my snowshoeing gear, I wanted to first talk about layering. I know most people who grew up in the North know all about layering, but it isn’t so straightforward for people like me that grew up in the south.

I know some people are probably reading this and rolling their eyes, but I truly had no idea how to layer properly when I first started hiking. So I know these tips will be helpful for someone out there.

First, let me say that layering is essential when it comes to winter hiking. It can help prevent hypothermia, and if you do it correctly, you will feel very comfortable when hiking in the winter.

So my first tip is to make sure you are as comfortable as possible throughout the hike. Take off a layer if you are hot, put on a layer if you are cold. Try to prevent yourself from sweating too much. If you are soaked in sweat and if it is freezing outside, guess what can happen? You can get hypothermia.

This is why it is essential to layer. If you wear only a big bulky jacket that is extremely warm, and you are hot when snowshoeing, then it can get pretty dangerous. If you sweat too much wearing the jacket or if you take off the jacket it can lead to hypothermia. So layering is key to snowshoeing.

My last tip is NOT to wear cotton. Cotton soaks up your sweat, which means that you might be hiking in cold, wet clothes. This is extremely dangerous, so I always recommend people to wear breathable workout clothes or anything made out of wool.

Base Layers

Top

Smartwool Merino 250 Base Layer Crew Top - Women's

Base layers should be the first clothing items you put on other than your underwear and bra. Merino Wool is probably the best type of base layer to wear. They are breathable yet warm, which is extremely important in the winter. Do not wear cotton. Cotten will soak up all your sweat, which can then lead to hypothermia. >>>Check Out My Favorite Base Layer Here

Bottom

Smartwool Merino 250 Base Layer Crew Bottom - Women's

I don’t always wear a bottom base layer on winter hikes as it can get too hot. But when the weather is pretty frigid, or I know I won’t be hiking the whole time (like if I am backpacking in the winter, for example), I wear bottom base layers. >>>Check Them Out Here

Mid Layers

Sweater

Kari Traa Rose Half-Zip Base Layer Top - Women's

Kari Traa is my second favorite base layers on the market. These base layers are so freaking cute and colorful! I have two of these in different colors because I love them so much and I might buy another one this year. I usually like to wear this as a mid-layer over my Smartwool base layers. They look adorable as a sweater if you take off your jacket while you are hiking (trust me, they are warm)! >>>Check Out The Cutest Sweater Here

Fleece

Patagonia Better Sweater Fleece Jacket - Women's

I am a Patagonia fanatic! I love their jackets, but I am a bigger fan of their warm fleece sweater. I sometimes wear these over my Smartwool base layers while hiking. I switch between this fleece sweater and the Kari Traa sweater. It just depends on how I am feeling that day. >>>Buy This Awesome Sweater Here

Fleece Leggings

The North Face Winter Warm High-Rise Tights - Women's

These are my go-to pants for winter hiking. They are fleece-lined, so they are warm and comfortable. Depending on how cold it is, I do add base layers below these pants. If the weather is very wet, I add my hiking pants on top of this. These pants are not waterproof, but they do well with snow, so I don’t add hiking pants on top of these too often. >>>Click Here For These Fleece Pants

Outer Layers

Insulated Jacket

Arc'teryx Cerium LT Hooded Down Jacket - Women's

The Arc’teryx Cerium LT is an excellent winter hiking jacket. It is extremely warm and breathable. When it comes to winter hiking, I will pick this over my Mountain Hardwear Jacket, and that is saying a lot because I love my Mountain Hardwear Jacket. The Cerium LT was made for winter hiking, and it shows. I also love that it comes in many colors! I have the lliad. >>>Buy This Super Warm Jacket Here

Rain Jacket/ Shell Jacket

Arc'teryx Zeta SL Rain Jacket - Women's

I always carry my rain jacket with me in case it starts to snow or rain. The insulated jackets will not keep you from getting soaked! I love the Arc’teryx rain jacket because it is extremely lightweight and waterproof. >>>Check Out My Rain Jacket Here

Pants

Arc'teryx Gamma LT Softshell Pant - Women's

I have tried many hiking pants in the past, and the Arc’teryx pants are probably my favorite ones. If I feel like there will be too much snow or rain, I like to put these on top of my base layers or leggings. >>>Check Them Out Here

Ski Pants

If you already have ski pants, you can use them for snowshoeing. If you don’t want to deal with wearing many layers, you can also buy ski pants for winter hiking. You don’t need to buy the most expensive pants because you won’t fall over a million times like when you ski. Ski pants can get pretty expensive! >>>These Are Somewhat Reasonably Priced

Footwear

Gaiters

Outdoor Research Rocky Mountain Low Gaiters

I don’t always wear Gaiters when snowshoeing, but they are beneficial when trekking through deep snow. If the snow gets into your hiking boots, it will melt (since your feet are warm), and so then you will have wet, cold feet. It is pretty uncomfortable having cold, slushy water in your boots, so you can avoid it with gaiters. >>>Check These Out Here

Snowshoes

Atlas Snowshoes Elektra Access Snowshoe - Women's

When the snow is way too deep, that is when you whip out your snowshoes. Trust me; it makes winter hiking so much easier. I have had the Atlas Elektra Access Snowshoes for a year now, and I love them. They are pretty easy to use, especially for a beginner. >>>Check Them Out Here

Microspikes

Kahtoola MICROspikes Traction System

I always bring microspikes with me on hikes in the winter. They are great to use when there is too much ice, and you are slipping around too much. They have a fantastic grip, and no hiking boots will ever give you great traction as microspikes do. >>>Check Them Out Here

Socks

Smartwool Mountaineering Extra Heavy Crew Socks

I love Smartwool socks! Especially these socks that are extra thick so your toes will be extra warm. If Smartwool isn’t a brand you like, then I recommend getting any other brand that is wool. Hiking can be hard on your feet, and wool socks are probably the best out there to prevent blisters. This is especially true if your feet sweat a lot. >>>Buy My Fav Socks Here

What Are The Best Boots To Wear Snowshoeing

Oboz Bridger 7" Insulated Waterproof Boots - Women's

If you have been following me for a while, you might know that I am a huge fan of Oboz shoes/boots. They make some great quality durable shoes that last for years. Their winter boots are no exception. They are warm, durable, and can grip ice a lot better than regular boots. They still need microspikes (all hiking boots do), but it still does better on ice than most boots. These are probably some of the best boots for snowshoeing. >>>Buy My Fav Snowshoe Boots Here

Buff

Smartwool Neck Gaiter

On very chilly, windy days, it is a great idea to have a buff. They can protect your ears, mouth, and nose. They also make a great mask for these Covid days. >>>Buy One Here

Beanie

DAKINE Kylie Pom Beanie - Women's

I HAVE to bring a beanie with me on my winter hikes. They really help with keeping you nice and warm on those frigid cold days. They also look great for pictures. My hair is so unmanageable, which is why you usually see pictures of me with a beanie. >>>Check One Out Here

Gloves

Outdoor Research Flurry Sensor Gloves - Women's

Since it tends to be slippery on trails in the winter, it is best to have gloves instead of warming your fingers up in your pockets. >>>Check Out These Gloves Here

Trekking Poles

REI Co-op Traverse Trekking Poles - Pair

I don’t always use trekking poles in the summer, but I certainly do in the winter. Trekking poles really help with my balance on some of these icy trails. They are also handy when you are snowshoeing. I like these REI ones because they are affordable, and they also have snow baskets for winter hiking. >>>Buy These Here

Backpack

Osprey Sirrus 24 Pack - Women's

In the summer, you can maybe get away with not wearing a backpack (I do not recommend it, but it is possible). But in the winter you NEED a backpack. The key to comfortably hiking in the winter is layering, so there is a high chance that you will get hot while hiking. You need somewhere to store these layers, so you are not sweating up a storm. Sweat can lead to hypothermia. >>>Check Out My Backpack Here
